Abigail caught Mateo speeding out of her hospital room like the bats of hell were on his tail. His expression was grim and she felt his irritation from the distance as if it were a presence shrouding him in flames.

Catching Parker by the arm, she smiled. “Could you go on without me? I’ll be right there.”

“Of course,” Parker said. “The fact that he’s up and talking is a good sign. I’m sure he’ll make a fast recovery.”

“Thank you, Parker.”

He nodded and disappeared into her father’s room. Abigail took off, racing to catch up to Mateo. His broad-shouldered form was easy to spot amidst the hospital personnel filling the hall. “Mattie!”

The shout ricocheted off the backs of the orderlies huddling behind him. Abigail hesitated, afraid to make a lot of noise in the hospital just to get Mateo’s attention.

The problem was solved when one of the orderlies touched his back. The handsome doctor stopped in the hall and allowed the pack of women to congregate around him. By the grooves around his mouth, she guessed that he wasn’t in the mood to talk, but that was just too darn bad.

After their discussion by her father’s bedside, she had a ton of questions. Learning that he’d intended to come after her the day she left Belize was a relief. The fact that her father had manipulated him to stay away from her was a suspicion that had finally been confirmed. The tidbit about her mother, however, was worth pursuing.

“I’m really not interested, ladies,” Mateo was saying when she drew closer. From the way the girls pushed against him, she figured that they weren’t taking no for an answer.

“Doctor,” a brazen one put her hand on his arm, “you never come to our get-togethers.” “Yeah!” the others agreed.

Abigail felt her feet moving and her mouth spurting words before her brain caught up with her body. “Mateo! Where have you been?

I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”

Mateo caught her eyes, a question burning behind his dark chocolate irises. “Abigail?”

“You, jerk. We had a date at Maruba tonight.” Abigail stopped in front of Mateo and glared at the woman who had her hand on his arm. She slowly retracted the limb. “Since it’s late, we can’t go today. That means you have to make it up to me.”

“Yeah, sure,” Mateo said, slowly. His deer-in-the-headlights expression was totally blowing her cover, but since Abigail had started, she figured she might as well finish it.

Taking his hand in hers, she linked their fingers. “See you later, ladies. I have to talk to him. You mind?”

The women sent her disapproving stares before scattering. Abigail smiled in victory and threw her hair across her shoulder. That’s how it was done.

“What are you doing?” Mateo asked, his eyes sparking with anger.

Wait… was he upset?

“I saved you from unwanted attention.”Abigail folded her arms across her chest. “You’re welcome.”

“I didn’t ask you to do that.”

“Well, I wanted to talk to you and I figured it would be the fastest way to clear the crowd.
